ABOUT UNESCO MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY PILOT

UNESCO’s MIL Cities Network

initiative aims to help cities embed MIL learning into various urban spaces, including transportation systems, health facilities, shopping centers, entertainment industries, and community activities.

What is Media and Information Literacy?

> A set of skills that empowers people to critically assess, analyze, evaluate, and create content across all digital and physical platforms. It is essential for navigating today’s complex information landscape.

* It combines media literacy (understanding how and why media is produced and how to use media platforms) and information literacy (knowing how to find and ethically use information).

* Media and Information Literacy skills directly support the right to information and freedom of expression, whilst also empowering individuals with the skills needed to combat disinformation, hate speech, social exclusion, and racism.

Our public libraries are positioned as community hubs that bridge gaps between all national and local government departments, the private sector, NGOs, and the public. Through facilities in all regions and community  services, including free Wi-Fi, learning  and meeting spaces, libraries function as decentralized, neutral spaces, providing access to information, hosting educational programs, and empowering citizens through lifelong learning and social inclusion.

Our Partnerships with different stakeholder's support Media and Information Literacy programs by different departments. These include  local universities such as Wits University, UNISA, and University of Johannesburg, tech companies, such as CISCO, Google, and Microsoft, offering free Digital literacy and Media literacy skill programs, to NGOS focused on literacy and youth skills development, and private corporations through their community.
